Monkey Bubble wanted to pick a platform that supported a 0% transaction fee, so as much of the money as possible ended up into the hands of the charity. When we have done charity events in the past, the charity was either known or the platform supported us assigning a charity after the event was over. The latter option is no longer available to us through Softgiving, given they have changed their platform design, wanting their donors to know from the start where their money is going when donating to a particular campaign.
I am very much for transparency so I agree with their decisions as an NPO, but for this event, the charity or cause was not known until after the tournament had ended, so we had decided to go with a different provider – Raisely.
All the money donated was processed and transferred to the Monkey Bubble Business account via a PayPal gateway, to be later distributed to the charity of the winner’s choice via our Bank or PayPal account to minimise transaction fees appropriately.
We took on this responsibility because we wanted to support the fundraiser in our own way, by forcing the reduction the transaction fees and hidden charges for donors to an absolute 0%, so all of your money with its intension goes to the charity, not in the pockets of PayPal or Banks. Transaction fees are often not advertised as much (usually 1.9 – 5 %) , but in this case, we felt money to the order of $500-150 is potentially lifechanging and should not be thrown away in fees or taken lightly. To do this, we are compensating these fees from our own pocket.
There was such a high volume of donations, you froze our PayPal business account. We can’t even pay our normal monthly operational expenses through this gateway until the disputes with PayPal are resolved, which means some subsidiary services, such as the store, will be affected for a short period of time. We did not anticipate this much love and support.
You guys are awesome.
We are resolving the issue with PayPal currently, and we will be posting receipts of donations made to organisations on this page when the dispute is cleared.
